• Will, 24 Mar 1634/35. In the name of God Amen. The four and twentieth of March 1634, I Thomas Earle of Barcombe in the County of Sussex yeoman being in good and perfect memory praise and thanks be unto the Almighty God therefore do make and ordayne this my last will and testament. First I bequeathe my soul into the hands of the Almighty God my maker and redeemer and my body to the earth from whence it came…………… My worldly goods with which it has pleased Almighty God to bestow on me I dispose of as following. First I give unto the poor of the parish of Newick? and Barcombe five shillings to be distributed amongst them on the day of my burial with the discretion of my overseers hereinafter named or one of them. Item I give unto Elizabeth my beloved wife Eight pounds of good and lawful money of England to be paid to her within one month next after my decease. Item I give unto John Newman my grandchild and oldest son of John Newman of Newick twenty pounds of good and lawful money to be paid to him immediately after my decease and one …. Bed blankets bolster and other things belonging thereunto one plate and a bedstead and all other goods and household stuff standing and being in my house in ……. And half my household stuff and implements not before given……. All the residue of my goods and chattels not before given or bequeathed, my debts and legacies being paid my funeral expenses discharged, I give unto Thomas Newman my grandchild and son of the aforenamed John Newman whom I make my sole executor to perform this my will according to my intent and meaning…. in all things. And further my will is that if I shall decease before the said Thomas Newman my executor shall accomplish the full age of one and twenty years that then my overseers hereinafter named shall have full power to take into their hands the… of my goods and chattels and shall pay and discharge all such legacies and payments and …. due and ….. to be paid by the hand of Thomas Newman and give unto Thomas Newman a true account…. at the full age of one and twenty years. Also I nomimate and appoint my beloved friends Thomas Coleman and George Virgo to be my overseers to this my will performing and giving to… them for their pains five shillings. • Will, 1636. In the name of God Amen I Elizabeth Earle of the parish of Barcombe sick in body but well in mind do make my last will and testament. First I bequeathe my soul to the Almighty God and my body to be buried in the churchyard of the parish aforesaid. Item I give to Margaret Jenner's three children twenty shillings to Anne Jenner one featherbed with a lindsey woollen ….. and one feather bolster. Item to John Hanford's two children John and Margaret twenty shillings. Item I give to James Laurie's two children ten shillings apiece. I give to William Gurr's four children twenty shillings and a pair of canvas? sheets to his wife. Item I give to John Turle's three children ten shillings apiece. Item I give to Edward Turle the son of John Turle one joined chest…. and one pair of ….. sheets and one hook? a flannel pillowcoat and one flaxen tablecloth and half a dozen of napkins. Item I give to ….. Hubbard of Isfield one chest that was his one pair of canvas sheets a flaxen pillowcoat and a feather pillow and one …… Item I give to William Shepherd one joined bedstead in the chamber( wherein he doth lay?) one chest one round table in the front chamber and all the ……. in the house that were …… Item I give to …. Page's four children twenty shillings. Item I give to John Newman's children forty shillings by equal portions to be divided between John Richard William and Mary and Thomas Newman the son of the said John Newman one joined chest the biggest one flaxen sheet one……… pillowcoat one bell one pewter stick? and one lanthorn. Item I give to the poor of the parish of Isfield ten shillings. Item I give to Peter Newman my godson five shillings to …… son of Richard Markwick…. shillings and Anne Newman daughter of John Newman five shillings and I do ordain and appoint John Turle my son in law to be my sole executor of this my last will and testament 1636 that the payment of the children… said legacies to their parents shall give them a discharge of it. Item I give to William Shepherd, my cupboard and one table and a form in the hall and all the stools except one round stool and my best feather bed and my best coverlet and one blanket and bolster one pillow one pair of homespun sheets. Item I give to Goody Kent and Goody Page all my working day apparel both woollen and linen
