Research Notes:
Hypothesis The Elizabeth Mill that married George Goring (1646-1714) in Greatham in 1677 was the daughter of Henry Mill (1617-1657) and Rebecca (neé Rycraft).
Summary of information as of 7 Apr 2021 The Sussex Visitation (1634) was conducted too early to be relevant.
William Berry's "Pedigrees of the Families of Sussex…" (1830) was based on the Sussex Visitation but adds that George Goring married the daughter of Thomas Mill (1604-1650) and Dorothy Cowper/Cooper (1626-1638). However, from Elizabeth's PCC will (PROB11/353/298, proved 1 March 1676/77), it is fairly certain that she did not marry and was living in Thistleworth (now Isleworth) when she died in February 1676/77.
We examined the families of all of Thomas's siblings extensively. The only other Elizabeth Mill from the Greatham family that has been identified was the daughter of Henry Mill (1617-1657) and Rebecca (neé Rycraft). Henry was a younger brother of the above Thomas.
This Elizabeth was baptised in 1657 and was mentioned in her father's will. Her mother then married William Segrave (of Itchingfield) in Petworth in 1665. No further records regarding this family have been identified to date.
Many parish registers were neglected during the Interregnum (1642-1660), which probably explains why some records such as Barbara Mill's marriage to Henry Billingsley (before 1654) are missing. If there was another Elizabeth born during this period, she could have been the daughter of: - William; married Jane before 1640; died before 1646 - Edmund; died between 1640 and 1646 - Francis; died after 1646.
