George Goring 2
General Notes: The said George Goring Married Catharine the Daughter of Richard Cheyney Esqe. and left Issue 4 Sons viz. George, Edward, Thomas, and John. Events • Property, 1640-1651, Balneath Manor, Chailey, Lewes, East Sussex, BN8 4AP, GB. 2 3 Balneath (or Balneth) formed part of the possessions of St. Pancras Priory at Lewes until the Dissolution. It was perhaps identical with the land which William de Warenne granted to the priory about 1095, being his demesne land 'from Beuehorne (Bevern) Bridge to Cheagele (Chailey) from the east road to the road beside the Bridge of Hamwde', which seems roughly to correspond with its present situation. The tenants of this manor had to carry 600 cartloads of wood yearly to the priory from Homewoodand Balneath Wood. George married Katherine Chesney, daughter of Sir Richard Chesney and Martha St. John, on 16 Aug 1601 in St. Peter-the-Great's Church [pre-1852: within Chichester Cathedral], West Street, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19 1PX, GB.1 2 (Katherine Chesney was born after 1579.)
• Marriage Licence, 29 Jul 1601, Chichester, West Sussex, PO19, GB. |
