Richard Whitfield 1

  • Born: 1279 1
  • Marriage (1): Joan 1
  • Died: 1332 aged 53 1

  General Notes:

Richard became Lord of Whitfield on the death of his father, Matthew (generation 6), sometime after 1310 when records show that Robert de Clifford, as warden of the march, had raised an army that included among the knights Richard de Quitfield. His birth and death dates are recorded in the records that were held at Whitfield Hall (probably now among records transferred to the Northumberland Record Office) and therefore provide a landmark to assess the dates of other generations. This means that Richard Whitfield was a knight and, secondly, that he must have sworn allegiance to the English crown rather than the Scottish crown.

In his analysis of the Whitfield line, John Palmer suggested that Richard, Lord of Whitfield married Isobel Vipont or Veteripont, but this does not fit the facts. Palmer acknowledged that Isobel was previously married to Roger de Clifford who died about 1283 having sired a son (the first Lord Clifford) in 1274. This strongly suggests that Isobel was married about 1273 which fits with her usually given birth date of 1254. Isobel would therefore have been considerably older than her second husband Richard Whitfield, and it is extremely unlikely that she was the mother of Robert born about 1302, as she would have been almost 50 when giving birth. The Viponts did have strong family connections with the Whitfields as they were lords of the adjacent parish of Alston. Marriage may well have taken place and it is possible that Isobel Vipont was the second wife of Richard's father, Matthew. Even more significantly there are documents from this time period that refer to Richard's wife as Joan. This is an example of not taking Palmer's research as fact and is discussed further in a subsequent section on the Palmer ancestry. 1

  Research Notes:

The pedigree of William Whitfield who married Maud Whitlaw/Whitley has been sourced from the Whitfield One-name website. At the moment none of the information has been verified and should be treated with appropriate caution.

Richard married Joan.1 (Joan was born about 1282 1.)
