Will, 21 Feb 1640/41. 2 In the name of God Amen I John Godly of Bynham in the parish of Chaileigh in the County of Sussex yeoman being of perfect memory and good health praised bee God doe make and ordaine this my last will and Testament in manner and forme followeing. First I commend my soule to Jesus Christ my alone saviour and my body to the earth whereof it was made. and as for my worldly goods I give to the poore people of the parish of Chaileigh aforesaid forty shillings to bee distributed the day of my funerall. Item I give to Margery my loveing wife tenn pounds. Item I give to my sister Sarah the nowe wife of John Killingbecke three and twenty shillings to putt into a ring. Item I give to my daughter Sarah three hundred pounds. I give to my daughter Marie one hundred pounds to bee paid her att the age of one and twenty yeares or day of marriage which first shall happen and for the maintenance untill her porcon bee payable myne executors shall allowe her fower pounds yearely. Item I give unto Ann my daughter fower score pounds to bee paid unto her att her age of one and twenty yeares or day of marriage which first shall happen and for her maintenance untill her porcon bee payable mine executors shall allowe her fower pounds yearely. Item I give unto Thomas Godly my sonne forty shillings. Item I give to my said sonne Thomas one bed and bedsted standing in the backe house chamber with all things thereunto belonging. And alsoe sixe paire of sheets to bee delivered by my executor att his discrecon. The residue of all my goods cattles and chattles my debts paid my legacies performed and funerall discharged I give unto my sonne John Godly whome I make and ordaine sole executor of this my last will and Testament requesting my brother in lawe John Killingbecke of Horsted Caines and my cosen William Chatfeild of Newicke to bee overseers of this my last will and I give to each of them tenne shillings. In witnes whereof I have herereto subscribed my name and affixed my seale the one and twentieth day of February in the sixeteenth yeare of the reigne of our sovereigne Lord King Charles of England &c and in the yeare of our Lord God one thousand sixe hundred and forty renouncing all former Wills by mee made and publishing this for my last will and Testament in the p'sence of these witnesses heereunder named. Lands - John Godly, father of J. G., on 16 Aug. 7 James settled "Herwards alias Harwoods" in Chaily on marriage between J. G. and Alice, daughter of Walter Smalham of Speldhurst, Kent. J. G. seized of "Hunts" and "Newlands" in Chiltington, parish Westmeston. On 6 April 8 Charles settled it on Mary G. his daughter. J. G. also seized of barn and lands in Westmeston called "Godlies Post."


John married Alice Smalham, daughter of Walter Smalham and Unknown, on 28 Aug 1609 in St. Mary the Virgin's Church, Speldhurst Hill, Speldhurst, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, TN3, GB.1 (Alice Smalham was born before 29 Dec 1594, baptised on 29 Dec 1594 in St. Peter's & St. Paul's Church, Church Lane, Tonbridge, Kent, TN9 1DA, GB, died before 15 Nov 1628 and was buried on 15 Nov 1628 in St. Peter's Church, Chailey Green, Lewes, East Sussex, BN8 4DA, GB 1.)
