Will, 29 Aug 1710. In the Name of God Amen I John Burtenshaw the Elder of Chailey in the
County of Sussex yeoman being sick and weake in Body But of sound Mind and
Memory (Praised be God) Doe this Nine and Twentieth day of August Anno Domini
1710 Make and Ordaine this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme
following First and principally I Commend My soule into the hands of
Allmighty God My Creator hopeing through the Meritts of My Most Blessed
Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ to Receive a full pardon for all my Sinnes and my
Body I Committ to the Earth to be decently Interred at the discretion of my
Executor hereafter named and as to my Worldly Estate I give and dispose thereof
as followeth Wheras I have the day of the date hereof Surrendered into the hands
of the Lords of the Mannor of Houndeane By the acceptance of Richard Botting &
Thomas Pelling - two Customary Tenements of the said Mannor All those five severall
pieces or parcells of land conteyning by Estimacon Twenty acres more or lesse and lying
in Chailey aforesaid which I lately purchased of Richard Pulman and now in my owne
occupacon To such uses Intents and purposes as I should by my last Will and Testament
Limmitt declare and appointe the same Now My Will and meaninge is And I doe
hereby Give and devise the said five severall parcells of land with their appurtenances
unto my son John Burtenshaw and to his heires and assignes forever Item I give to
my Son in Law Richard Bull one Shilling And unto My daughter the wife of him the
said Richard Bull five pounds to be paid unto her by my Executor hereafter named within
one yeare after my decease Item I give unto my GrandDaughter Mary Bull ten pounds
to be paid unto her by me Executor within one yeare after my decease Item I give to
Wiliam Hoder one shilling Item I give to my Maid Servant Anne Mathew five
pounds And all the Rest of my goods Chattells and personall Estate whatsoever
after my debts Legacyes and funerall Expences are paid and discharged I give
and Bequeath unto My Son John Burtenshaw whome I make full and Sole
Executor of this My last will and Testament Revoking all former Wills by me
heretofore made In witness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale
the day and yeare first above written

Bull the twenty pounds which Nicholas Pumphrey owes me. Item I give and bequeath unto my said
Brother John Burtenshaw the Money which Goodman?Wood the tanner at Fletching owes
me Item I give & bequeath unto my Niece Mary Bull My Little Round Box Item I give to My
Brother Bull My Chest and bridle which is at his house All the rest of My goods Chattells and personal
Estate not before bequeathed I give and bequeath unto My Brother John Burtenshaw whom I
make full and sole Executor of this My Will Item whereas I have the day of the date hereof
Surrendered into the hands of the Lords of the Mannor of Houndeane by the ?? and acceptance of
Edward Buckwell and Francis Page two Customary Tenements of ye said Mannor All that Messuage
or tenement and barne and severall parcells of Land thereto belonging conteyning by Estimacon
Eighteen acres more or less late .. lyeing in Newick And alsoe All those five severall pieces or parcells
of land lying in Chailey called Copes Comon To such uses Intents and purposes as I shall by my
last will and testament in writing Limitt declare and appoint the same Now My will and meaneing
is And I doe hereby give and devise the said Messuage barne & landes in Newick unto my Sister
Bull and her heires forever And all the said five peeces or parcells of land called Copes Comon
I give and devise to the said John Burtenshaw & his heires foever Item I give unto my
Godson Thomas Tobutt five shillings to buy him a bible to be paid by my said Executor within
within three months after My decease In witness whereof I have hereunto sett my hand and seale
the day and yeare first above writeen
