Will, 27 Jul 1705. In the name of God Amen I John Godley of Chayley in the County of Sussex
Gentleman doe this seaven & twentieth day of July - Anno Domini 1705 (being in good Health) make and
ordaine this My Last Will and Testament in manner and forme following First and
principally I Comend my Soule into the hands of Almighty God My Creator hopeing thro'
the Meritts of Jesus Christ My most blessed Lord and Saviour to Receive a full pardon for
All my Sinns and My Body I Committ to the Earth to be decently buryed att the discretion of my
Executors in Trust and as to my Worldly estate I give and dispose thereof as followeth Imprimis
I give and bequeath unto the poore of the parishe of Chayley aforesaid five pounds to be
distributed amongst them by the Overseers of the said parishe within a Month after my death Item I
give and bequeath unto all my servants which shall be Liveing with me at my death over and
above their wages the sume of Twenty shillings a piece Item whereas I did Att a Court Holden
for the Mannor of Ditchling garden the Ninth day of June 1702 surrender by the Rodd
into the hands of the Lord of the said Mannor by the acceptance of John Whitpaine Gent
Steward of the said Mannor all that Messuage or Tenement called Byneham with the
Appurtenances in Chayley and holden of the said Mannor To such use and uses Intents and
purposes as I should by my last Will and Testament in writing limitt direct and
appointe Now my will and meaning is and I doe hereby give and devise the same unto
my Son Thomas Godley and to his heires and assigns forever Item I give and bequeath unto My
two daughters Mary and Barbara Godley the summe of seaven hundred pounds a piece
to be paid unto them att their respective ages of one and twenty yeares or dayes of Marriage
which shall first happen togeather with Interest for the same after the rate of
five pounds per cent until their respective Legacyes shall become due and payable for their
Mainteynance and education and for the more certaine payment thereof I give and devise
all my Lands whatsoever in Chayley aforesaid with their and every of their appurtenances unto
George Goring of Barcombe in the County aforesaid Esqr George Goring of Chayley aforesaid
Gent James Plumer of Chayley aforesaid Gent and Walter Vinall of Chayley aforesaid
yeoman and to the Survivor and Survivors of them and to the heires of the survivor of them
In Trust to sell the same if occasion require or by the Rents and profitts thereof to pay to my said two
daughters their said respective Legacyes & Interest till the same shall become due and
payable and if it happen that either of my said daughters dye before they come to age or
be marryed then my will is that three hundred and fifty pounds of the porcon of her soe dyeing
shall be paid unto my surviving daughter at her age of one and twenty yeares or day of Marriage
which shall first happen by the said George Goring Esqr George Goring Gent James Plumer
& Walter Vinall whome I make Executors In Trust of this My Last Will and Testament
And in Case my Executors In Trust shall raise money out of my personal estate sufficient with
the Rents of my Lands to pay my said daughters porcons Then I give and devise All and singular
the said lands unto my son Thomas Godley and to his heires and assignes forever

Item I give and bequeath unto my Cozen Thomas Midmor and unto my Brother and sisters
John Mary & Hannah Goring Each a Ring of twenty shillings value Item I give and bequeath
unto my Executors & to their Wives Each a Ring of the same value All the Rest of my Goods
Chattells and personall estate I give and bequeath unto my said son Thomas Godley And
I doe hereby appointe my said Executors In Trust & the survivors of them to be Guardians to my said son and daughters
untill they shall Attaine to their respective ages of fourteene yeares In witnesse whereof I
have to Each sheete of this my Will being two in number sett my hand and seale the day

In the name of God Amen I George Goring of Chailey in the County of Sussex gent being in good health of Body and of Sound perfect and disposing mind memory and understanding (God Almighty be praised therefore) do make ordain publish and declare this my last Will and Testament in writing in manner and form following First and principally I commend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God my Creator hopeing for Salvation through the merits of Jesus Christ my blessed Saviour and Redeemer and my body I resign to the earth to be therein decently buried according to the discretion of my Executors hereafter named and as touching the disposition of such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me I doe hereby will give and dispose thereof as followeth And first I give and devise unto my loving wife Elizabeth Goring and to my brothers John Goring of Barcombe gent and John Egles of Uckfield gent and George Egles of Wadhurst gent All that my Mannor of Barcombe with all the rights Members and appurtenances thereunto belonging And also All that Mesuage or Tenement Barns Buildings Farme Lands Hereditaments and premises with the appurtenances and usualy called or known by the name of the Court Farm And also All that Barne Farm lands and premises with'appurtenances called Culvers situate lying and being in Barcombe aforesaid in the said County of Sussex and now in the tenure and occupation of James Cripps Yeoman or his Assignes And also all other my Freehold Messuages Buildings Lands Tenements and Hereditaments situate lying and being in Barcombe aforesaid & which I have not heretofore setled in Jointure on my said Wife Also I give and devise unto the said Elizabeth Goring John Goring John Egles and George Egles all and every my Copyhold Messuages Tenements Barns Buildings Lands Tenements Hereditaments and premises ......... of the Mannor of Allington which I have heretofore Surrendered to the use of my last Will situate lying and being in Chailey and Barcombe aforesaid and now in my own occupacon and in the occupacon of John Heasman and Tho[ma]s Holman or their Assignes And also All that my piece or parcell of Freehold land lying near Copperdsbridge in Chailey aforesaid And also all other my Freehold Copyhold Mesuages Lands and Tenements lying and being in Chayley aforesaid and which are not Setled in Jointure as aforesaid To have and to hold the said Mannor Mesuages Barnes Buildings Lands Tenements Hereditaments as well Freehold as Copyhold and every part and parcell thereof with their and every of their appurtenances unto the said Elizabeth Goring John Goring John Egles and George Egles and their Heirs upon Speciall Trust and Confidenc and to the intent and purpose that they the said Elizabeth Goring Jogn Goring John Egles and George Egles and the Survivors and Survivor of them or the Heirs of such Survivor do and shall with all convenient speed after my decease make Sale thereof and dispose of the moneys arising from such Sale (after the Mortgages and Incumbrances thereon shall be discharged towards the payment of such Debts as I shall owe at the time of my death Also I give and bequeath unto my Aunt Dorothy Ellis to my brother John Goring and to his Wife and daughter to my brother John Egles and to his Wife Son and daughter to my brother George Egles and to his Wife Son and daughter and to my Nephew Thomas Godley and to each and every one of them twenty one Shillings to buy them rings in remembrance of me Also I give and bequeath unto my said Wife and to my Four daughters Mary, Martha, Elizabeth and Dorothy Goring and to each of them the Sume of Twenty pounds of lawfull money of great Britain to buy them mourning Also I give and bequeath to the Poor People of the Parish of Chailey the Sume of Five pounds and to the poor People of the Parish of Barcombe the like Sume of Five pounds to be distributed amongst them by the Churchwardens of the said parishes within six months next after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto every one of my Servants that shall be living with me at the time of my death over and above their wages the Sume of twenty Shillings to be paid them within six months next after my decease Also I give and bequeath unto my said wife Elizabeth Goring the aforesaid John Goring John Egles and George Egles and to the Survivors and Survivor of them all and Singular my goods chattells and Personal Estate or what nature kind or sort soever In Trust also to Sell the same as soon as conveniently may be after my decease and dispose of the money arising by the Sale thereof towards payment of my just debts Legacys and Funeral expences And also upon this further trust that my said Trustees and the Survivors and Survivor of them do and shall pay all such moneys as shall be remaining in their hands after my Debts legacys and Funerall expences are fully paid & satisfied unto my said four daughters Mary Martha Elizabeth and Dorothy Goring share and share alike And I do hereby make & appoint my said Trustees joint Executors of this my Will revoaking and declaring void all former and other Will or Wills by me at any time heretofore had made & published The Will of John Goring late of Barcombe Esq dece[ase]d was proved the Eighteenth day of March in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty five Before the Reverend Mr Edward Lund Surrogate Upon the Oaths of Thomas Godley John Plumer and Robert Plumer only Executors named in the said Will To whom was Comitted Administration of the Goods and so forth Being first sworn well and faithfully to administer the same and so forth.

Will, 28 Jan 1762. 2 In the name of God Amen I Martha Goring of Ades in the parish of Chailey in the County of Sussex spinster do make and ordain my last Will and Testament in Manner following I desire to be privately buried in the Day Time in the Parish Church of Chailey aforesaid at the Discretion of my Executrix hereinafter named And I give and Devise All and singular my Messuages lands tenements and hereditaments whatsoever and wheresoever as well Freehold as Copyhold with their and every of their appurtenances (having previously surrendered my Copyholds to the use of my Will) unto my respected friend and Kinsman Richard Beard Streatfield of Copwood in the Parish of Uckfield in the said County Esquire and his Heirs In Trust nevertheless to sell the same together or in Parcells for the best price and prices that can be reasonably had or gotten for the same And upon this further Trust that my said Trustee or his Heirs and my Executrix hereinafter named shall by with and out of the Money thereby arising and by with and out of my other Personal Estate pay and satisfy all my just Debts that I shall owe at the time of my decease my funeral Expences and the Costs of proving this my Will and shall thereout likewise pay and satisfy the Annuities and Legacies hereinafter mentioned that is to say I give Devise and bequeath unto my Cousin Thomas Godley the Elder of Hasting in the County aforesaid Gentleman one annuity or yearly sum of Twenty pounds of lawfull Money of Great Britain clear of all Taxes and Deductions whatsoever to be paid to him yearly and every year from the time of my Decease for and during his natural Life at and upon the two most usual Feasts or days of Payment in the Year (that is to say) The Feast of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Michael the Archangel by even and equal Portions and the first Payment thereof on the next Feast Day of the Feast aforesaid as shall happen after my Decease And I give & bequeath unto my Cousin Thomas Godley the younger Son of the aforesaid Thomas Godley the Elder the sum of Five Hundred Pounds of like lawful Money to be paid to him within the space of one whole year next after the Decease of his said Father and my own Decease Also I give and bequeath unto my said Cousin Thomas Godley the Elder over and above the aforesaid Annuity and to Elizabeth his Wife and to my Cousin John Luck and Barbara his Wife and to my Cousin George Egles and Elizabeth his Wife the sum of Five Guineas apiece of like lawfull Money to be paid to them respectively in the space of six Months next after my Decease Also I give and bequeath unto my Cousin Lucy Egles daughter of George Egles of Barcombe in the said County Gentleman the sum of Five Hundred pounds of like lawfull Money of Great Britain to be paid at her age of Twenty one years with Interest in the meantime to wit from my death until payment of the same Legacie at the rate of three pounds p[er] centium p[er] annum Also I give to my Godson Thomas Fuller son of John Fuller of Uckfield in the said County Appothecary and Surgeon the Sum of Fifty pounds of like lawfull Money to be paid into the Hands of his said Father John Fuller and his receipt to be a sufficient Discharge in six months after my decease. Also I give my Maidservant Martha Snelling one Annuity or yearly sum of Ten pounds of like lawful money to be paid to her clear of all Taxes and deductions yearly and every year from and after my decease for and during her natural Life at and upon the two most usual Feasts or Days of payment in the year that is to say The Feasts of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saint Michael the Archangel by even and equal portions and the first payment thereof on the next Feast day of the Feast aforesaid that shall happen after my decease Also I give to the poor people of the said Parish of Chailey the sum of Five pounds of like lawfull Money to be paid and distributed in the space of one Month next after my decease unto and amongst them or such of them and in such manner and form as my said Trustee and Executor hereinafter named shall in their discretion think fit And I give unto all and every my Servants that shall be living with me at the time of my decease One Guinea apiece to be respectively paid to them within the space of one Month next after my decease And all the rest and residue as well of my Goods Chattells Jewells Plate Books Picktures Personal Estate and Effects whatsoever as of the Monies arising by such Sale of my real estate as aforesaid (after all Costs incident to the performing the said Trusts and my said Debts Annuities Legacies aforesaid and the Costs of proving this my Will and funeral Expences are fully paid and satisfied) I give and bequeath unto my much esteemed friend and Kinswoman Mary Streatfield the Wife of the aforesaid Richard Beard Streatfield whom I constitute and appoint the sole Executrix of this my last Will and Testament Martha Goring And my Will and Mind is that in the meantime and until such sale of my said real Estate as aforesaid the rents and profits of my said Messuages Lands and Premises shall be subject and liable to the payment of my said Debts and the Interest thereof and the said Annuities Legacies and other incidental Expences in like manner as the moneys arising by such Sale are herein before directed to be applied and paid. And for the promoting and facilitating the Sale of the said Messuages Lands and Premises my Will is and I hereby declare that the receipt and receipts of the said Richard Beard Streatfield his Heirs Executors or Administrators shall be good and sufficient Discharges to the Purchasor or Purchasors of the Premises so to be sold as aforesaid And that such Puchaser or Purchasers after such receipt or receipts shall not be obliged to see the Moneys by them respectively applied in pursuance of this my will or be answerable or accountable for any loss misapplication or non application of such Purchaser Money or any part thereof Provided always and my will and Mind further is that my said Kinsman Thomas Godley the Elder and his Heirs shall upon the request of my said Trustee Richard Beard Streatfield his Heirs or Assigns refuse or neglect to join with him or them in ------ing surrendering and assuring any my real Estate and premises unto and to the use of such purchaser or purchasers and his and theirs Heirs as aforesaid That then upon such refusal or neglect the said Annuity of Twenty pounds per annum so by me given to the said Thomas Godley the Elder and the said Legacie of Five Hundred pounds by me given to the said Thomas Godley the younger as aforesaid shall cease and be void and shall not be paid but shall thereupon be lapsed to and for the use & benefit of my said Kinswoman Mrs Mary Streatfield in like manner as if the same had never been given anything therein contained to the contrary thereof in anywise notwithstanding And Lastly I revoke all former Wills by me made and declare this to be my last Will and Testament In Witness whereof I the said Martha Goring to this my last Will and Testament contained in two Sheets of paper have set my hand and seal that is to say To the first sheet thereof my hand and to this last sheet thereof my hand and seal and also my seal to the tape wherewith the same are fixt together at the top the twenty eighth day of January in the second year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the third by the Grace of God of Great Britain France and Ireland King Defender of the Faith and so forth and in the year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Sixty two Martha Goring LS Signed Sealed published and Declared by the said Martha Goring the Testatrix as and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us who in her presence at the request have subscribed our names as Witnesses Thomas Attree Thomas Bennett George Turle
