Will, 27 Jul 1705. In the name of God Amen I John Godley of Chayley in the County of Sussex
Gentleman doe this seaven & twentieth day of July - Anno Domini 1705 (being in good Health) make and
ordaine this My Last Will and Testament in manner and forme following First and
principally I Comend my Soule into the hands of Almighty God My Creator hopeing thro'
the Meritts of Jesus Christ My most blessed Lord and Saviour to Receive a full pardon for
All my Sinns and My Body I Committ to the Earth to be decently buryed att the discretion of my
Executors in Trust and as to my Worldly estate I give and dispose thereof as followeth Imprimis
I give and bequeath unto the poore of the parishe of Chayley aforesaid five pounds to be
distributed amongst them by the Overseers of the said parishe within a Month after my death Item I
give and bequeath unto all my servants which shall be Liveing with me at my death over and
above their wages the sume of Twenty shillings a piece Item whereas I did Att a Court Holden
for the Mannor of Ditchling garden the Ninth day of June 1702 surrender by the Rodd
into the hands of the Lord of the said Mannor by the acceptance of John Whitpaine Gent
Steward of the said Mannor all that Messuage or Tenement called Byneham with the
Appurtenances in Chayley and holden of the said Mannor To such use and uses Intents and
purposes as I should by my last Will and Testament in writing limitt direct and
appointe Now my will and meaning is and I doe hereby give and devise the same unto
my Son Thomas Godley and to his heires and assigns forever Item I give and bequeath unto My
two daughters Mary and Barbara Godley the summe of seaven hundred pounds a piece
to be paid unto them att their respective ages of one and twenty yeares or dayes of Marriage
which shall first happen togeather with Interest for the same after the rate of
five pounds per cent until their respective Legacyes shall become due and payable for their
Mainteynance and education and for the more certaine payment thereof I give and devise
all my Lands whatsoever in Chayley aforesaid with their and every of their appurtenances unto
George Goring of Barcombe in the County aforesaid Esqr George Goring of Chayley aforesaid
Gent James Plumer of Chayley aforesaid Gent and Walter Vinall of Chayley aforesaid
yeoman and to the Survivor and Survivors of them and to the heires of the survivor of them
In Trust to sell the same if occasion require or by the Rents and profitts thereof to pay to my said two
daughters their said respective Legacyes & Interest till the same shall become due and
payable and if it happen that either of my said daughters dye before they come to age or
be marryed then my will is that three hundred and fifty pounds of the porcon of her soe dyeing
shall be paid unto my surviving daughter at her age of one and twenty yeares or day of Marriage
which shall first happen by the said George Goring Esqr George Goring Gent James Plumer
& Walter Vinall whome I make Executors In Trust of this My Last Will and Testament
And in Case my Executors In Trust shall raise money out of my personal estate sufficient with
the Rents of my Lands to pay my said daughters porcons Then I give and devise All and singular
the said lands unto my son Thomas Godley and to his heires and assignes forever

Item I give and bequeath unto my Cozen Thomas Midmor and unto my Brother and sisters
John Mary & Hannah Goring Each a Ring of twenty shillings value Item I give and bequeath
unto my Executors & to their Wives Each a Ring of the same value All the Rest of my Goods
Chattells and personall estate I give and bequeath unto my said son Thomas Godley And
I doe hereby appointe my said Executors In Trust & the survivors of them to be Guardians to my said son and daughters
untill they shall Attaine to their respective ages of fourteene yeares In witnesse whereof I
have to Each sheete of this my Will being two in number sett my hand and seale the day
and yeare above written

Goring of Barcombe in the County of Sussex Esqr being in good health & of
perfect mind & memory (Almighty God be praised therefore & for all other his
great mercies& blessings to me) Yet knowing by certainty of death & uncertain
ty of the time when doe make & declare this my last will & Testament First
& Principally I yeild & consigne my poore & precious Soule to Almighty
God my heavenly Father stedfastly beleiving through the meritts of Jesus
Christ my blessed Saviour & Redeemer to obteyne full pardon and remission
of all my sinns And I committ my body to the Earth from Whence it came to bee
decently interred at the discretion of my Executrix & Executors herein
after named And touching such worldly goods & Estate as God in his mercy
hath lent mee I dispose thereof as followeth Imprimis I give and
devise All that my Messuage where I now dwell with the Barnes Stables Gardens
Closes Outhouses & other buildings with the appurtenances thereunto belonging containing
one acre or thereabouts And alsoe All those foure pieces or parcells of land with an
Orchard & Milking close thereunto adjoyning conteyning together by estimation
Fourteen acres & an halfe Abutting & bounding to the Queens highway leading
from Barcombe Church to Camois Court green on the East, to a parcell of ground
called Churchfeild on the South, to A mead called the Church mead on the West, & to
A land called Douseland? on the North, late the lands of . Beecher & before
Combers And also All those three pieces or parcells of land called the Churchfeild
with the green Close lying before the Messuage aforesaid conteyning together by
estimation Eleven acres more or lesse lying & adjoyning to the aforesaid lands
late Beechers & before Combers on the East & North to a lane leading from Barcomb
Church to Cobb greene on the South, & to the lands of Thomas Earle on the West All which
lands & premisses are situate lying & being in Barcombe aforesaid & are now in
Geo Goring

my owne occupacon, To my deare wife Mary Goreing & her assignes for & during
the terme of her naturall life And imediately from & after here decease To my youngest
sonne John Goreing & his assignes for & dureing the terme of his naturall life And
from & after his decease To his first sonne of the body of the said John Goreing
lawfully to bee begotten & to hs heires Males of the body of such first sonn lawfully
yssuing And for want of such issue To the second son of the body of the said John
Goreing lawfully to bee begotten & to the heires Males of the body of such second soon
lawfully yssuing And for default of such yssue To the third son of the body of the said
John Goreing lawfully to bee begotten & the heires Males of the body of such third
sonne lawfully yssuing And for default of such yssue To the fourth fifth sixth & all &
every other son & sonnes of the body of the said John Goreing lawfully to bee begotten
severally successively & respectively one after the other in order & ^^ as they shalbee
in seniority of age & priority of birth, & the severall heires Males of his & their severall
& prospective body lawfully to bee begotten the elder of such sonnes & the heires Males
of his or their bodys And for default of such yssue To the heires female & females of
the body of the said John Goreing lawfully to bee begotten & the heires of her or their
bodys lawfully yssuing And in default of such yssue To my eldest sonne George
Goreing his heires & assignes for ever And whereas I have surrendered A Copyhold
Messuage with the Barns buildings & lands thereunto belonging commonly called or known
by the name of Shaws & Crowchfeilds conteyning by estimacon Fourscore acres more
or lesse with the appurtenances situate lying or being in Chailey in the said County of Sussex
adjoyning to the lands of Sir Thomas Mansell Barronet called the Old Parke on the East
& South, to the Queens highway leading from Markstakes Common to Newick Church
on the West & to the lands of John Carpenter on the North, holden of the Mannor
of Allington in the County aforesaid & now in the tenure of John Weller his under
Tenants or assignes To the use of my laast Will Now in pursuance thereof I doe
hereby give & devise the said messuage lands & premisses with th'appurtenances
To my said sonne John Goreing & his assignes for & dureing the terms of his
naturall life And imediately from & after his decease To the heires Males of his
body lawfully to bee begotten And for default of such yssue To the heires female
of his body lawfully to bee begotten & the heires of the body or bodys of such
yssue female lawfully yssuing And in case my said sonn John Goreing shall dye
leaving no yssue of his body lawfully begotten Then I give or devise the said
Copyhold Messuage Lands and Tenements with th'appurtenances thereunto belonging
To my loveing friends James Plumer & Francis Langford of Chailey aforesaid Gent
their heirs & assignes for ever To the end intent & purposes that they or the
Survivor of them or their heires of such Survivor shall within one yeare next
after the decease of the said John Goring my sonne without yssue of his body
sell & dispose of the said Messuage lands & premisses for the best price &
most money that can be made thereof And my will & mind is & I doe
hereby give & bequeath the money arising by such sale To my Granddaughters
Mary Martha & Elizabeth Goreing daughters of the said George Goreing my
sonn, to Mary & Barbary Godly daughters of my late sonn in Law John Godly
Gent & to the daughter or daughters (not exceeding three) of my daughter Mary
now Wife of John Egles Gent to bee equally divided between them. And for
my personall Estate I dispose thereof as followeth Item I give to the poore
of the parish of Chaily Forty shillings to bee paid & distributed amongst them within
one moneth next after me decease at the discretion of my Executrix & Executor
hereinafter named. Item I give & bequeath unto my said sonn Georg Goreing
& to my said daughter Mary Egles five pounds A piece & to my daughter
in Law Elizabeth now wife of my said donn Georg Goreing & to my said sonn in
law John Egles & to my sonne in Law John Smith Clerk Four pounsa A piece All
which last mentioned Legacies soe given & bequeathed as aforesaid shalbee
paid unto each of them within three moneths next after my decease Item I
give unto the aforesaid Mary Martha & Elizabeth Goreing & to Thomas Godly
& the said Mary & Barbary Godly my Grandchildren Twenty shillings A piece
to buy them Rings in remembrance of mee Item I give & bequeath unto the
said Mary my wife the use of my Coach & Coachhorses & all & singular my
Goods & household stuffe plate linnen woollen pewter brass Bedds & bedding & all
other utensills & implements of household whatsoever in or about belomging to
my now dwelling house situate in Barcombe aforesaid for & dureing the
terme of her naturall life And from & after her decease I give & bequeath
All & Singular my said Goods household Stuffe plate linnen woollen pewter
brasse Bedds bedding & all other utensils & implements of household To the
said John Goreing All the rest residue & remainder of my Goods Chattells
ready money arrears of Rent bills bonds mortgages Leases & personall
Estate whatsoever (my debts Legacies & funerall expences being first paid
& discharged ) I give & bequeath unto my said wife & sonn John Goreing
whom I does hereby make ordaine constitute & appoint Executrix & Executor
of this my last will and Testament And my further will and meaning is
& I doe hereby likewise make & appoint my said loveing friends James
Plumer and Francis Langford Overseers of this my last will desireing
and requesting them to bee aiding and assisting to my said Executrix &
Executor in the due performance hereof & I doe give unto each of them
Twenty shillings to buy the Rings in remembrance of mee And I doe
hereby Revoak & make void all former will or wills by mee at any
time heretofore made & doe declare this to bee my last will & Testament
In Witness whereof I have to a Labell at the top of this my will affixed my
Seale & to each halfe sheet or side hereof being five in number have sett
my hand this two & Twentieth day of March One Thousand seven hundred
