the Twelfth day of October Anno Domini one thousand
Seven hundred & one I John Artridge of Lewes in the
County of Sussex Woollendraper being weake & sicke in bodye
but of sound mind & memory (praised bee God) Doe make &
ordaine this my last Will and Testament in manner and forme Following
First I give & bequeath unto my daughter Margarett
Artridge the summe of Two hundred and Fifty pounds of
lawfull money of England, to bee paid unto her by my
Executor hereafter named when shee shall attaine to her age
of one and twenty years or day of marriage which shall first
happen; Item I give and bequeath unto my daughter
Mary Artridge the like sume of Two hundred and fifty
pounds of like lawfull money to bee paid unto her by my
Executor in like manner. And my Will & meaning is and I
doe hereby Charge and require my Executor hereafter named
to pay unto my said daughters Margarett and Mary
interest for their severall and respective Legacyes untill the
same shall become payable at the rate of fower
pounds per Cent and shall likewise give unto my said daughter
Margaret on the receipt of her Legacy a Generall release
under his hand & seal. All the rest and residue of my
goods (hells Creditts and personall whatsoever ) I give and
bequeath unto my Sonn Mathew Artridge whome I make &
ordeyne Sole Executor of this my last Will & Testament. And I
desire my brother in Law Mr James Plumer of Chayley and
my Cosin JohnGodley? of Chayley aforesaid Gent to bee
Overseers of this my last Will & Testament to see the same
duely Executed and performed In witness whereof I the said

hand & Seale the day & Yeare above written

• Will, 27 Jul 1705. In the name of God Amen I John Godley of Chayley in the County of Sussex
Gentleman doe this seaven & twentieth day of July - Anno Domini 1705 (being in good Health) make and
ordaine this My Last Will and Testament in manner and forme following First and
principally I Comend my Soule into the hands of Almighty God My Creator hopeing thro'
the Meritts of Jesus Christ My most blessed Lord and Saviour to Receive a full pardon for
All my Sinns and My Body I Committ to the Earth to be decently buryed att the discretion of my
Executors in Trust and as to my Worldly estate I give and dispose thereof as followeth Imprimis
I give and bequeath unto the poore of the parishe of Chayley aforesaid five pounds to be
distributed amongst them by the Overseers of the said parishe within a Month after my death Item I
give and bequeath unto all my servants which shall be Liveing with me at my death over and
above their wages the sume of Twenty shillings a piece Item whereas I did Att a Court Holden
for the Mannor of Ditchling garden the Ninth day of June 1702 surrender by the Rodd
into the hands of the Lord of the said Mannor by the acceptance of John Whitpaine Gent
Steward of the said Mannor all that Messuage or Tenement called Byneham with the
Appurtenances in Chayley and holden of the said Mannor To such use and uses Intents and
purposes as I should by my last Will and Testament in writing limitt direct and
appointe Now my will and meaning is and I doe hereby give and devise the same unto
my Son Thomas Godley and to his heires and assigns forever Item I give and bequeath unto My
two daughters Mary and Barbara Godley the summe of seaven hundred pounds a piece
to be paid unto them att their respective ages of one and twenty yeares or dayes of Marriage
which shall first happen togeather with Interest for the same after the rate of
five pounds per cent until their respective Legacyes shall become due and payable for their
Mainteynance and education and for the more certaine payment thereof I give and devise
all my Lands whatsoever in Chayley aforesaid with their and every of their appurtenances unto
George Goring of Barcombe in the County aforesaid Esqr George Goring of Chayley aforesaid
Gent James Plumer of Chayley aforesaid Gent and Walter Vinall of Chayley aforesaid
yeoman and to the Survivor and Survivors of them and to the heires of the survivor of them
In Trust to sell the same if occasion require or by the Rents and profitts thereof to pay to my said two
daughters their said respective Legacyes & Interest till the same shall become due and
payable and if it happen that either of my said daughters dye before they come to age or
be marryed then my will is that three hundred and fifty pounds of the porcon of her soe dyeing
shall be paid unto my surviving daughter at her age of one and twenty yeares or day of Marriage
which shall first happen by the said George Goring Esqr George Goring Gent James Plumer
& Walter Vinall whome I make Executors In Trust of this My Last Will and Testament
And in Case my Executors In Trust shall raise money out of my personal estate sufficient with
the Rents of my Lands to pay my said daughters porcons Then I give and devise All and singular
the said lands unto my son Thomas Godley and to his heires and assignes forever

Item I give and bequeath unto my Cozen Thomas Midmor and unto my Brother and sisters
John Mary & Hannah Goring Each a Ring of twenty shillings value Item I give and bequeath
unto my Executors & to their Wives Each a Ring of the same value All the Rest of my Goods
Chattells and personall estate I give and bequeath unto my said son Thomas Godley And
I doe hereby appointe my said Executors In Trust & the survivors of them to be Guardians to my said son and daughters
untill they shall Attaine to their respective ages of fourteene yeares In witnesse whereof I
have to Each sheete of this my Will being two in number sett my hand and seale the day
and yeare above written
