General Notes:
OSBERT [II] Giffard (-1245). "Osbert Gifford" was granted livery of "the manor of Winterburn" made to him by "Elias Gifford his brother" dated 11 May 1229. Matthew Paris records the death in 1245 of "Osberti Giffard", although he does not specify his parentage. A writ dated 24 Jul "31 Hen III", after the deaths of "Osbert Giffard and Alice Murdac" names "Osbert son of the said Osbert, age variously stated as 12 ˝, 13 ˝ and 13 on the quinzaine before St John the Baptist last, is heir of the said Osbert and Alice" and his manors "…Hekebokel…sometime held by the said Osbert and Isabel his wife [Devon]…".
m ISABEL de Bocland, daughter of ALAN de Bocland of Egg Buckland and Hooe & his wife Alice Murdac. SIR OSBERN, or OSBERT, GIFFARD, of Winterborne Houghton, and Langham in Gillingham, Dorset, Egg Buckland and Hooe, Devon, Standlake and Deddington Oxon, Pitchcombe, co. Gloucester, Forscote and Elm, Somerset, and Astwell, Northants, son and heir of Sir Osbern GIFFARD, of Winterborne Houghton, &c. (who died shortly before 17 October 1237), by Isabel, daughter and heir of Sir Alan DE BOCLAND, of Egg Buckland and Hooe (a): which last named Osbern was a younger son of Sir Elis GIFFARD, of Brimpsfield, co. Gloucester, by Maud, daughter of Sir Morice Fitz ROBERT FITZ HARDINGE, of Berkeley, in that county.
(a) Isabel was daughter and heir of Alan de Bocland, of Egg Buckland and Hooe, by Alice, younger daughter and coheir (the other was Beatrice, wife of Robert Mauduit) of Ralph Murdac, by Eve de Gray, Lady of Standlake and Dornford, Oxon. Alice was afterwards wife of Ralph Harenge.
